Collagen peptides are short chains of amino acids produced by hydrolyzing collagen from animal tissues. The raw material commonly comes from bovine hide, porcine skin, fish skin, or poultry cartilage. Hydrolysis breaks native collagen's triple helix into smaller fragments and increases water solubility relative to intact collagen. The resulting mixture contains peptides of varying lengths rather than a single molecular species; commercial samples are often described by average molecular weight or by a size range. This broad composition affects functional properties such as gelation, foaming, and mouthfeel.
Enzymatic, alkaline, or acid treatments can cleave collagen into peptides. Enzymatic hydrolysis with proteases is common because it allows control over temperature, pH, and reaction time, while the choice of enzyme and raw material influences the peptide profile and amino acid composition. Glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline are abundant in collagen peptides, whereas tryptophan is typically low or absent. Hydroxyproline serves as a characteristic marker for collagen-derived material. Processing conditions also affect color, odor, and taste, which matter for food and supplement applications.
Production begins with cleaning and mincing raw collagen-rich tissues. The material undergoes pretreatment to remove non-collagenous components, followed by hydrolysis using enzymes such as pepsin or alcalase, or by acid or alkaline treatment. Reaction time, temperature, and pH influence the average molecular weight of the resulting peptides. After hydrolysis, the mixture is filtered, concentrated, and dried, often by spray drying. The final product is a powder with a characteristic amino acid profile rich in glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline.
Collagen peptides are distinguished from gelatin by their lower average molecular weight and better solubility in cold water. Gelatin forms gels upon cooling, while collagen peptides typically do not. Molecular weight distributions for commercial collagen peptides often range from about 2 to 20 kilodaltons, though exact profiles vary by manufacturer and process. Products may be sold as powders, capsules, or liquids. The term "collagen hydrolysate" is frequently used as a synonym, although labeling conventions differ across regions.
Collagen is a structural protein found in connective tissues of animals, and collagen peptides are short amino acid chains produced by hydrolyzing native collagen into smaller fragments. The hydrolysis process typically uses enzymes or acids under controlled conditions. Commercial collagen peptides often come from bovine hide, porcine skin, or fish scales. The resulting material is water-soluble and differs from intact collagen in molecular size and behavior. The term 'collagen peptide' generally refers to a mixture of peptide chains rather than a single defined molecule.

French president Emmanuel Macron initially expressed joy, declaring on social media that "Maduro is a dictator, and his departure is good news for Venezuelans. He confiscated the freedom of his people and stole the 2024 elections." However, days later he nuanced his message, saying that the method employed by the Americans "does not have the support or approval" of France. United Kingdom prime minister Keir Starmer said that he was happy for the fall of Maduro, and he would wait to know the facts before commenting further. José Antonio Kast, the president-elect of Chile, stated that Maduro was not the legitimate president of Venezuela, had "destabilized Latin America", called his capture "great news", and remarked that work remained and the "governments of Latin America must ensure that the entire apparatus of the regime relinquishes power and is held accountable". Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez urged de-escalation, stating that "[i]nternational law and the principles of the U.N. Charter must be respected"; this was echoed by European Union (EU) foreign policy chief and European Commission vice-president Kaja Kallas. The governments of Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Uruguay, and the outgoing administration in Chile issued a joint statement rejecting the US action and expressed their concern saying that it could "constitute an extremely dangerous precedent for peace and regional security and endanger the civilian population".
Methanediamine is the simplest geminal diamine. Its chemical formula is CH2(NH2)2, and its structure consists of two amino groups on a central carbon atom. Although methanediamine only exists transiently in solution, its hydrochloride salt has been used in chemical synthesis since 1914. The hydrochloride is useful for the synthesis of primary amides from amino acids.
==== Ethiopia ==== Approximately 30% of the Ethiopian population carry an extra copy of the gene CYP2D6, and are classified as codeine ultrametabolizers. These individuals metabolize codeine to morphine at a dangerously fast rate, leading to adverse events and potentially death. As a consequence the Ethiopian Food, Medicine and Health Care Administration and Control Authority has entirely banned the use of codeine as unsafe for the general population.
RTI-5152-12, or WW-12 (in patent), is a synthetic small-molecule agonist of the atypical chemokine receptor ACKR3 (CXCR7) that was derived from the naturally occurring alkaloid conolidine. RTI-5152-12 has 15-fold improved potency towards ACKR3 relative to conolidine. ACKR3 is a novel opioid receptor which functions as a broad-spectrum trap or scavenger for endogenous opioid peptides, including enkephalins, dynorphins, and nociceptin. The receptor acts as a negative modulator of the opioid system by decreasing the availability of opioid peptides for their classical receptors like the μ-opioid receptor. Ligands of ACKR3, by competitively displacing endogenous opioid peptides from ACKR3, can potentiate the actions of these endogenous opioids and produce effects like analgesia and anxiolysis in animals. RTI-5152-12 is being developed as a potential pharmaceutical drug and, as of December 2021, is in the preclinical stage of development for treatment of pain. The chemical structure was not disclosed until a patent was published in June 2022.

Episcleritis is a benign, self-limiting inflammatory disease affecting part of the eye called the episclera. The episclera is a thin layer of tissue that lies between the conjunctiva and the connective tissue layer that forms the white of the eye (sclera). Episcleritis is a common condition, and is characterized by the abrupt onset of painless eye redness. There are two types of episcleritis, nodular and simple. Nodular episcleritis lesions have raised surface. Simple episcleritis lesions are flat. There are two subtypes. In diffuse simple episcleritis, inflammation is generalized. In sectoral simple episcleritis, the inflammation is restricted to one region. Most cases of episcleritis have no identifiable cause, although about a third of cases are associated with various systemic diseases. Often people with episcleritis experience it recurrently. Treatment focuses on decreasing discomfort, and includes lubricating eye drops. More severe cases may be treated with topical corticosteroids or oral anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs).
The Terciopelo (Bothrops asper) has been described as excitable and unpredictable when disturbed. They can, and often will, move very quickly, usually opting to flee from danger, but can suddenly reverse direction to vigorously defend themselves. Adult specimens, when cornered and fully alert, should be considered dangerous. In a review of bites from this species suffered by field biologists, Hardy (1994) referred to it as the "ultimate pit viper". Venom yield (dry weight) averages 458 mg, with a maximum of 1530 mg (Bolaños, 1984) and an LD50 in mice of 2.844 mg/kg IP. This species is an important cause of snakebite within its range. It is considered the most dangerous snake in Costa Rica, responsible for 46% of all bites and 30% of all hospitalized cases; before 1947, the fatality rate was 7%, but this has since declined to almost 0% (Bolaños, 1984), mostly due to the Clodomiro Picado Research Institute, responsible for the production of antivenom. In the Colombian states of Antioquia and Chocó, it causes 50–70% of all snakebites, with a sequelae rate of 6% and a fatality rate of 5% (Otero et al., 1992). In the state of Lara, Venezuela, it is responsible for 78% of all envenomations and all snakebite fatalities. One of the reasons so many people are bitten is its association with human habitation, and many bites occur indoors.
=== Film === Major Force appears in Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, voiced by Ricardo Chavira. This version can fly and his role plays out similarly to the comics version before Power Girl unintentionally kills him.
==== Top-fed deep water culture ==== Top-fed deep water culture is a technique involving delivering highly oxygenated nutrient solution direct to the root zone of plants. While deep water culture involves the plant roots hanging down into a reservoir of nutrient solution, in top-fed deep water culture the solution is pumped from the reservoir up to the roots (top feeding). The water is released over the plant's roots and then runs back into the reservoir below in a constantly recirculating system. As with deep water culture, there is an airstone in the reservoir that pumps air into the water via a hose from outside the reservoir. The airstone helps add oxygen to the water. Both the airstone and the water pump run 24 hours a day. The biggest advantage of top-fed deep water culture over standard deep water culture is increased growth during the first few weeks. With deep water culture, there is a time when the roots have not reached the water yet. With top-fed deep water culture, the roots get easy access to water from the beginning and will grow to the reservoir below much more quickly than with a deep water culture system. Once the roots have reached the reservoir below, there is not a huge advantage with top-fed deep water culture over standard deep water culture. However, due to the quicker growth in the beginning, grow time can be reduced by a few weeks.
The calling in question of the actions and policies of government led to a new climate of debate. The issues of emancipation, colonialism, environmentalism and grassroots democracy were discussed at all levels of society. In 1979, the environmental party, the Greens, reached the 5% limit required to obtain parliamentary seats in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen provincial election. Also of great significance was the steady growth of a feminist movement in which women demonstrated for equal rights. Until 1977, a married woman had to have the permission of her husband if she wanted to take on a job or open a bank account. Further reforms in 1979 to parental rights law gave equal legal rights to the mother and the father, abolishing the legal authority of the father. Parallel to this, a gay movement began to grow in the larger cities, especially in West Berlin, where homosexuality had been widely accepted during the twenties in the Weimar Republic.
